For those who don't know : An individual with hypochondriasis is known as a hypochondriac. Hypochondriacs, become unduly alarmed about any physical or psychological symptoms they detect, no matter how minor the symptom may be, and are convinced that they have, or are about to be diagnosed with, a serious illness.
These days so many of us are worried about our health that as soon as we feel something is wrong we dive into doctor google and then discover that we were dead a week last Tuesday. It seems to be a very human trait that some of us are born to worry and if we haven't anything to worry about we find something and end up with health problems that we don't really have, but some how we feel comfort for thinking we have.
This week what was a fairly routine visit to my doctor for an injection to help with the pain in my right hip turned into something more. My wife noted my belly button was sticking out and pointed it out to the Doctor, it turns out that I have an Umbilical Hernia. So she kindly gave me some advice and a leaflet explaining what it was about. Now there are dangers with it, but it can be repair easily, but my mind skipped the repair be and focused on the dangers bit ! Okay so I don't want to face another operation as in the last 12 years I have had 3 and it's not nice. That included a hernia repair.
A few days on from the doctor's visit I can laugh at my over worrying, but did my doing so tip me towards hypochondria? Yes, I think it probably did as I became over aware of everything in my body something which I am not generally aware of apart from the fact of having M.E. and having to live with all the joys that brings !!!
On a serious note are those hypochondriacs amongst us hiding some thing more serious, could the be not wanting attention for illness, but hiding deep emotional problems? This is just my thought.
Yet again we all know that if we start searching dr google then we will find something wrong with us and some magic cure for anything we manage to imagine we have. The good thing now is that people can say I am not a hypochondriac I have hypochondriasis and are ill after all - or are they?
